The Little Tree

The Little Tree
'For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; ye shall find a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the Heavenly hosts praising God, and saying, glory to God in the highest, and on Earth peace, good will toward men." Luke 2:11-14

Charlie Brown just can’t get into the spirit of the Christmas Season. Linus tells Charlie “This is the most joyous season!”
I have watched this show for years and have only recently seen the symbolism of Linus as a messenger of the Lord’s glorious message. Linus uses his beloved blanket as a slingshot for a snowball, does this remind you of another young man in history?
The rest of the Peanuts gang are wrapped up in the Christmas traditions of man (materialism, self-centered, etc) except for Linus. He continues to question “Why are we doing this?”
Charlie Brown melts down as his Christmas production falls apart and asks “Does anyone know what Christmas is all about?”

The messenger Linus arrives, who recites: Luke 2:11-14
"For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; ye shall find a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the Heavenly hosts praising God, and saying, glory to God in the highest, and on Earth peace, good will toward men."

Charlie reflects on the Word Linus has shared and admires his scrawny Christmas tree, which then collapses in front of him. Dejected he exits the stage leaving the tree behind.
Once again, Linus appears on the scene. He props up the poor little tree. Miraculously the entire Peanuts production cast arrives and the tree is transformed into a sight of beauty.

The little tree is a representation of us.
Christ came into this world to be born as a child, an innocent Lamb. In a few years, this Lamb would be sacrificed on a Cross to transform us from a scrawny collapsed tree into a magnificent tree of beauty. His sacrifice transformed us from condemned to redeemed and righteous. Restoring our eternal relationship with God.
Linus got it right, this is the REAL “reason for the season”!

Dear God, help us to remember what Christmas is all about. That Jesus came to earth to transform our scrawny, collapsed life into a life that reflects His magnificent beauty. Jesus,
You are the reason for the season. In His name, Amen.
