“A sword shall pierce your soul, for this child shall be rejected by many and this to their undoing. But he will be the greatest joy of many others. And the deepest thoughts of many hearts shall be revealed.” Luke 2:34-35(TLB)
If you had a superpower, what would it be? Would you want to see into your future? You’d see joy, but the sorrows would break your heart. What if you could eliminate some of those sorrows? Hmmm….. Simeon was one of a few people known as the Quiet in the Land, a peaceful people who watched and waited for the promised Savior of the world. Simeon’s life was complete that day in the Temple when he saw God’s promise fulfilled. He experienced overwhelming joy as he cradled the Anointed King in his arms. Simeon gave a blessing, but then gave the Christ-child’s parents a glimpse into the future. “A sword shall pierce your soul, for this child shall be rejected by many and this to their undoing. But he will be the greatest joy of many others. And the deepest thoughts of many hearts shall be revealed.” Though Simeon’s words were spoken directly to Mary and Joseph that day, they still reverberate to us today with a glimpse into our own future. Rejecting Christ brings about our undoing while surrendering to Him brings great joy. Actually, we can alter our future with that one decision.
Points to Ponder:
Which do you choose? Pride will bid us to reject Him, while a surrendered, devout heart like Simeon’s, will lead us to the truest joy.
Lord, I want to take Simeon’s words to heart and surrender my life to the Anointed King, Jesus. Crucify my pride and reveal the joy that only You can bring. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
