“And he came to her and said ‘Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!’” Luke 1:28 (ESV)
We do not know exactly why God chose Mary to be the Mother of Jesus, yet we can all agree that it certainly happened. Today’s scripture tells us that Mary was called “favored one.” Sure, she loved God and possessed some great attributes, yet none of that matter when she called out as “favored one.” This Greek word is translated to mean “to grace” or “to be accepted.” Right now, you may wonder what a great place it must be to be favored by God, but in reality and as a believer in Christ, we too are favored as children of God when He accepted us as described in Ephesians 1:6. Moreover, you may wonder, if I am a “favored one” then why must the problems and the struggles in my life continue…should it not cease since I am a “favored one”? Well, after Mary willingly received and accepted the call and God’s plan for her, life was far from peaches and cream. Mary experienced disgrace in the eyes of many as an unwed mother and almost the lost her fiancé as everything was beginning to take place.
Points to Ponder:
Amongst all the gift-giving this holiday season, have you taken time accept the best gift of all-JESUS? If so, “favored one,” please be encouraged to share the best gift of all with someone this season…Perhaps while you are waiting in line to purchase that last gift, enjoying hot cocoa, or spending time friends and loved ones around a warm fire.
God…thank You for accepting me when You extended Your loving grace. I am honored to be called “Favored One” and humbly ask for Your boldness to share Your gift with all I meet this holiday season…In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
