“But seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33(NIV)
The Advent Season is all about looking forward to the coming of Jesus the Messiah. Many of us are familiar with the traditional characters of the Christmas story, beginning with an angel and Mary while ending with baby Jesus lying in a manger. This week, we explore the lives of two overlooked people, Simeon and Anna, as they are very much part of the Advent story. These two did not know that eight days before their encounter with the Kingdom of God, the Prince of Peace had been born. Simeon and Anna lived parallel lives, perhaps never even speaking or coming in contact with each other. Yet, their lives collided with God’s Kingdom in the Temple eight days after His birth. It is in their story that the Advent season continues on the journey that we recognize today. It seamlessly connects the prophecies of old with the prophecies of new (Luke 2:21-40). Their stories live out “Seeking first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness.” It is through their faithfulness you will see how they, with child-like excitement, were part of the life of Mary, Joseph, and Jesus.
Points to Ponder:
So this week, be encouraged as you anticipate how God may want to speak to you through these two significant people that God used for His glory.
Heavenly Father, as this special time of year continues, help me celebrate by seeking first Your Kingdom with anticipation of my Savior returning to earth. I desire to be faithful to You, just like Anna and Simeon. May I seek Your Kingdom and witness the Messiah first hand through a relationship with You.
