“Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared.” Matthew 2:7(ESV)
Every year when the holidays roll around, there are usually one or two people that we know who make it rather tough. Because of the “Christmas Spirit” we are told to be inviting and kind, but in reality they seem to make everything more difficult. Interestingly, the wise men dealt with something very similar. The wise men stopped in Jerusalem to pay their respects to the current ruler of the region, Herod. They must have assumed that Herod knew all about the King who was born and probably thought Herod would be as excited as they were; however, as we know, Herod was not happy at all. In fact, Herod tried his best to use the wise men to find Jesus so he could have Jesus killed. Herod was more concerned with his own personal interests than any prophecy about a Messiah being born in the region or that he had any need for a Messiah in the first place. Again, Herod was only consumed with getting what he wanted out of life and nothing more.
Points to Ponder:
It seems the holidays can bring out the deep selfishness within us. Herod is a perfect example of those that missed the point. The wise men paid their respects but they moved on to find what it was they were searching for. Do not allow anyone stop you this season from finding the greatest gift of all time. Pay your respects but keep searching, for if we seek Jesus we will find Jesus.
Lord, I pray for all those people in my life, whether difficult or uplifting. Lord, help me to keep seeking You no matter who crosses my path. Thank You, Lord, for the people in my life, and I pray they would seek and find You this season…In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
