“Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem.” Matthew 2:1(ESV)
The Christmas story is filled with so many interesting characters but none more fascinating than the mystery men from the East. They have been described as Kings, which they were not. They have been numbered at three, which is nowhere to be found in Scripture. What we do know is that they came from the Persian area where the prophet Daniel was held in captivity, proclaiming the prophecies of God and the coming Messiah. We also know that they must have read the prophecy of Daniel and believed because they were keeping a constant vigil looking for the star that would guide them to a new King. This is the key point, that they were seeking the King of Kings that they read about from the prophet Daniel who foresaw this hundreds of years before. They must have had a great amount of confidence in what Daniel had written to plan a very long and costly trip to Jerusalem. These wise men were wise because they sought out the King and nothing was going to stop them from finding him.
Points to Ponder:
What are you searching for this Christmas? Is it the hustle and bustle, or the best deal on a gift, or, like these wise men, are you willing to trade everything to search for and find the King of Kings.
Lord, It is so easy to get caught up in the business of Christmas and miss what is truly important. Lord, help me to quiet my heart and mind and fill me with a hunger to find You this season. Lord, please give me the wisdom to keep first things first and search for You with all my heart because I know that, if I do, everything else will fall into its proper place. In Jesus’ name….Amen
