“The genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.” Matthew 1:1 (ESV)
Matthew opens with the genealogy from Abraham to Jesus so that the Jews could see through the family tree that Jesus was the Messiah. Throughout the bloodline you see men of faith and devotion to God. We all have family trees, generations of men and women before us that sowed seeds into our families that are bearing fruit today, both good and bad. Think about where you holiday traditions came from, as I’m sure many were passed down through the generations. However, what takes place within our family tree goes far beyond holiday recipes and tree ornaments. Maybe your great-grandmother was the first to get saved in your family and sowed seeds of faith which you are reaping fruit from. Maybe it is something negative, like anger, that your grandfather sowed and passed down to your father. Now you quickly find yourself battling the same if not worse temperament. Good or bad, where we come from matters, and what we do today impacts generations to come.
Points to Ponder:
I encourage you as I encourage myself to make room for Jesus in midst of the office parties, family gatherings, holiday traffic, and sometimes endless shopping lists, make time for HIM… Are you willing to keep CHRIST first this CHRISTmas season?
God, Help me to appreciate where I came from. Break any generational bondage that was sowed into our families. Help us to sow seeds of faith and love into the generations that will follow. Thank You for the gift of salvation and that by accepting You as our Lord and Savior, we are now adopted children of the most High King. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
